UCanMakeItIfYouTry - Whatever the Present Moment Contains
Eckhart Tolle offers one of the most transformative invitations in all of personal growth: accept the present moment as if you had chosen it. Not as a last resort -- but as a first response.
Whatever the Present Moment Contains, Accept It as If You Had Chosen It
-- Eckhart Tolle
Read that again slowly.
Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it.
Not tolerate it. Not endure it. Not white-knuckle your way through it.
Accept it -- as if you had chosen it.
This is one of the most radical and liberating ideas in all of personal growth, and it comes from one of the most profound teachers of our time, Eckhart Tolle.
Why This Is So Hard
Our minds are wired to resist what we do not like. When something painful, inconvenient, or unwanted shows up in our lives, the instinctive response is to push back. To say: This should not be happening. This is wrong. I do not want this.
And sometimes that resistance feels justified. Sometimes life hands us things that are genuinely hard -- loss, illness, disappointment, betrayal. It can feel almost offensive to be told to accept it.
But Tolle is not asking you to pretend the pain is not real. He is not asking you to smile through suffering or act as though everything is fine.
He is asking you to stop adding the weight of resistance on top of what is already hard.
The Difference Between Pain and Suffering
Pain is often unavoidable. Suffering -- the story we tell about the pain, the arguing with reality, the endless loop of why me and this is not fair -- that is something we can choose to set down.
When you accept the present moment as if you had chosen it, you are not saying you wanted this. You are saying: This is what is here right now. I will not waste my energy fighting what I cannot change in this moment.
And in that acceptance, something remarkable happens. The suffering softens. The mind quiets. You find yourself back in the present -- which is, after all, the only place where anything real ever happens.
What It Looks Like in Practice
You are stuck in traffic and running late. Instead of gripping the wheel and fuming, you breathe and say: This is what is happening. I accept it.
You receive news that changes your plans entirely. Instead of spiraling into anxiety, you pause and say: This is the moment I am in. I will meet it.
You are going through something painful that you cannot fix right now. Instead of fighting it at every turn, you allow yourself to be in it -- fully, honestly -- and trust that you will find your way through.
This is not weakness. This is one of the most powerful things a human being can do.
Acceptance as a Doorway
Tolle teaches that acceptance is not the end of the road -- it is the beginning. When you stop fighting the present moment, you free up enormous energy. Energy that can now go toward clarity, creativity, compassion, and action.
You cannot change what you will not first acknowledge. And you cannot move forward from a place of resistance.
Accept the moment. Then, from that place of stillness, decide what comes next.
You Can Make It
Whatever you are facing today -- whatever this present moment contains -- you have the strength to meet it. Not by pretending it is easy. Not by forcing a smile. But by choosing, consciously and courageously, to accept what is.
From that acceptance, everything becomes possible.
